Project 15: Choose your own adventure

Your group is to design a problem that incorporates the three main principles the p-cubed course has focused on:

  1. Conservation of Energy
  2. Conservation of Momentum
  3. Conservation of Angular Momentum

Your design should include both the problem statement (storyline, just look at any of ours for details) and the solution to the problem. Imagination is a plus. You should use the four quadrants and include any appropriate sketches (including appropriate measurements and any necessary free-body diagrams). You can write it up on the sheets provided and on the white boards. Try to include a motivation within the problem for all 3 laws of conservation and not just include them randomly.

A good solution will not just be equations but will include some commentary.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to review any physics you had particular difficulty with and the tutors are here to help you consider the correctness of the physics you are trying to include in your problem.

Project 15: Super Snail vs Evil Poisonous Toad

For as long as the planet Kachow (surface gravity of 15 m/s^2) has existed, evil poisonous psychedelic toads have ruled. Their psychedelic abilities prevented any living beings from being able to stop them. They are rapidly growing in population and their large levels of poison are causing serious harm to Kachow. Scientists in a remote toad protected lab have been hard at work for a solution. They were losing hope until one day a solution came, or slid, to their door. At the door there was 2 Chains – a giant African snail who had been given super powers. 2 Chains is able to communicate with the scientists and tells them he has a special shell of 0.5 m diameter that has flaming darts that he is able to shoot out simultaneously. If the scientists could kill King Toad, all the other toads will retreat to their underground liar. King Toad resides at the bottom of a hill, and there is a spiky pit behind him. If King Toad is heated to a temperature of 228 degree Celsius, and slides into the pit he will perish forever. The plan is that 2 Chains will sit at the top of the 19 m high hill and rotate his snail shell with an angular velocity of 44 rad/s. A large number of flaming aluminum darts of mass 1 kg will be released from the edge of the shell and launched towards King Toad. King Toad sits on a surface with a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.17 at a distance of 18 m from the edge of the spiky pit. King Toad is 5 m tall, has a mass of 500 kg, a specific heat capacity of 1.2 J/g/K,and an initial temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. How can they succeed?
